As I mentioned in my inspiration post this past Wednesday, I created something for the first time using my sewing machine! I made a throw pillow cover!
I had a pillow insert that had just been sitting in my closet forever so I decided a cover for it would be a simple enough project to get me started.
What I learned from my mistakes:
- I learned that I should have sewn each side with a backstitch in each end before moving on to the next side. I did a backstitch at the beginning, but just kept going from there, turning at each corner and continuing my straight line. The result was that one of the corners stitching came loose. So I had to go back and fix that corner.
- I made the pillow case so that the fabric overlapped in the center so that I could stuff the pillow in from the back. I did it this way because I wanted my pillowcase to be one that I could remove and wash. I learned that I should have sewn the edges of the fabric that would be visible in the opening. Fraying fraying fraying. Why didn't I think of that?
I guess we learn by trial and error. I am very happy with my first project though! Now that I've learned from my mistakes I can't wait to make something more my style, like the ones that I shared on Wednesday.
Do you sew? What was your first project?
